The principle is simple. A cylinder at top dead center (TDC) with both valves closed must be completely sealed. If the cylinder doesn't hold its pressure, there's a problem. By injecting a measured quantity of pressurized air into the cylinder and observing any losses, either via the dial, visually (bubbles coming out of the expansion tank) or by ear, the Engine's state of tightness or hermeticity can be quickly assessed. - worn rings will let air escape through the crankcase and then through the oil breather - a defective exhaust valve will let air escape through the exhaust system - a defective intake valve will let air escape through the carburetor or air filter - a cracked cylinder head or damaged head gasket will allow air to escape in the form of bubbles through the expansion tank or radiator cap. |
